Does Discord have built-in translation?

What Discord translates on its own, what it does not, and when you need a translation bot instead.

Short answer: partially, and not in the way most people need.

Discord has been gradually adding translation to its own client, and depending on your platform and how far the rollout has reached you, you may already see a Translate option on individual messages. What Discord does not provide is translation of a whole community: there is no setting that turns a channel into a bilingual channel, no per-language copies of the same conversation, and no automatic translation of new messages as they arrive.

That gap is why translation bots exist, and why hundreds of thousands of servers use one.

What Discord does natively

  • Per-message translation in parts of the client. Where available, you can translate a single message you are looking at. Availability varies by platform, region and client version, so two members of the same server can see different options.
  • No automatic channel translation. New messages are not translated as they are posted. Someone has to act on each message, one at a time.
  • No per-language channels. Discord cannot mirror a conversation into separate language channels. Everything a member sees is whatever is written in the channel they are in.
  • No translation of the server around you. Channel names, announcements, rules and pinned messages stay in the language they were written in.

Why that is not enough for a real community

Per-message translation is fine when you occasionally need to understand a stranger. It falls apart when a server has members who genuinely do not speak the main language:

  • The conversation moves without them. By the time someone translates a message, ten more have been posted. They are always reading history, never taking part.
  • Nobody translates their own messages. A Portuguese speaker can read the English chat, but the English speakers cannot read their replies, so they stop replying.
  • It does not scale to staff. Moderators cannot translate every message in a busy channel, and rules that only exist in one language get broken by people who never understood them.
  • Mobile members get the worst of it. Translation options are least consistently available where most members actually read Discord.

What a translation bot adds

A translation bot sits in your server and does the work continuously:

  • Automatic translation in chosen channels. Pick the channels and languages once, and every new message is translated from then on, including while you sleep.
  • Translation on demand. Slash commands and the right-click Apps menu translate a single message when you need it, in any channel.
  • Flag reactions. Members react to a message with a country flag and get the translation into that language, which is the lightest possible way for members to ask.
  • Translations that read like conversation. Instead of a wall of bot embeds, the translation can post as the person who wrote the original message, so the channel still reads like people talking to each other.
  • Bilingual channels, not just bilingual people. With two-way translation, one channel can serve both language groups at once.

Setting it up in about a minute

  1. Add Jake to your server and run /quickstart. You need the Manage Server permission.
  2. Choose the language you are translating from (Any language if you are not sure) and the language you want results in.
  3. Pick the channels where translation should happen. Enable two-way translation for a genuinely bilingual channel.
  4. Check Jake can view and send messages in those channels. That is it, new messages start translating immediately.

You can change any of it later with /translation or in the dashboard, including which channels are translated, which words or roles are ignored, and how the results look.

Frequently asked questions

Is Discord's translation free? Where it is available, the per-message option is part of the client. What you cannot do natively at any price is translate a whole channel automatically.

Can I translate a Discord server without adding a bot? Only message by message, and only where the client offers it. Anything continuous requires a bot.

Will translation bots translate other bots' messages? Some do, usually as an opt-in extra, which matters if you use other integrations that post announcements or game updates.

Does translation work in threads and voice channels? Text channels and threads are well supported by dedicated bots. Voice translation is a much newer, more limited feature and usually a paid one.
